My Hidden Genius (lyrics) – by Christopher Smith

He’s locked down in his hole under the stairs,
Breathing the stale subterranean air.
Where the spiders are cranky and the silverfish eat
All my skritchy scratch paper.
That’s where I keep my hidden genius.
  My hidden genius.

He’s starved for attention. He’s cravin’ some light.
He whines and he cries and he calls out all night.
“Does anyone up there even know I’m around around???”
So I open his hole and I holler, “Pipe Down, you hidden genius!”
  “Shut up, hidden genius!”

Sometimes I’m tempted to put that big pillow right over his face
Put him out of his misery
Because we both need the sleep
and the worms need the space…

My good friends come over. They sit for a spell.
Noise leaks thru the floor and they say, “What the hell’s?
all that thumpety thumping? That rattling chains?”
I say, “I don’t hear nothin'”
Cause I can’t explain my hidden genius.
  My hidden genius.

I used to wonder, if he ever got out, where on earth would he go?
well, last night I left his door open a crack. And now I know…

I found him down at Matteucci’s, playin’ at the bar.
Singin’ his heart out to an empty tip jar.
And the tv was on. Drunks were drowning him out.
They didn’t give a flying fuck about my hidden genius!
  My hidden genius…

He’s locked down in his hole under the stairs,
Breathing the stale subterranean air.
Where the spiders are snarky and the silverfish eat
All my skritchy scratch paper.
Go back to sleep, my hidden genius.

Go to sleep hidden genius.
Count some damn sheep hidden genius!
Not one peep!
  My hidden genius…
