The Moment Slipped Away (lyrics) – by Christine Lavin

She’s a famous actress on movies and TV.
I recognize her as we climb the stairs of the IRT.
We cross the street together, moving up Broadway.
I’m trying to come up with something clever I can say
About how I love her work and what it means to me.
How, in her most recent film, she acted brilliantly.
Maybe she’ll think I’m stupid…
Or maybe it’ll make her day.
She disappeared into the crowd,
  And the moment slipped away…

He works the wards of Bellevue Hospital, mail delivery.
For two years, every weekday morning, he said hello to me.
We’d joke about the local teams and the weather of the day.
Though there were many other things I really wanted to say.
You see, he wasn’t like the rest of us. It was a struggle for him to walk.
And you had to concentrate really hard just to understand him talk.
I wanted to ask him, “Where do you get the courage to come to work each day?”
But I quit that job. I moved along.
  And the moment slipped away…

Kind words don’t move the earth.
But, if they can improve your self worth,
Why do I let these moments pass me by?
Instead, I’m quick to judge, I’m quick to blame…
I’m quick to criticize, quick to maim.
It’s hard to change, but I’ll try.
Oh, I’ll try.

So maybe it’s your best friend. Or the next stranger you see.
Maybe it’s your neighbor. Maybe it’s you. Maybe it’s me,
Who needs to hear encouragement to make it through the day…
Who needs to hear whatever kind words you might have to say.
It doesn’t matter where you’re going or where you have been.
Cause now is the perfect time for us to begin
To appreciate each other in new and different ways.
Oh please don’t let another golden moment slip away.

I’m Not Quite Over You (lyrics) – by Cliff Eberhardt

Everything seems in order.
Everything seems to be fine.
I still get it done,
But sometimes I have to try.

I am watching my footsteps
Taking myself down the street.
Everything is an effort.
Everything feels incomplete…

Did you ever notice little things about me?
Now you never notice anything new.
I can’t stop the feeling
I’m not quite over you.

I noticed that you haven’t called me.
Did you know that I’m back in town?
I’ve always been a lousy dancer,
Twisting myself all around.

Did I ever tell you that I’m sorry?
Did I ever tell you that you are wrong?
Did I ever tell you one damn thing
To make you stay away so long?

Did you ever stop your crying?
Now you got me crying too.
Everybody’s got a problem.
And I’m not quite over you.

I’m not over this feeling.
You’re not out of my heart.
You did not disappear.
Am I just standing in the dark?

I didn’t get the message.
I didn’t see you.
I didn’t get over you.
Did you get over me?

I am counting the minutes.
I am wasting my time.
The only way to get better
Is to get you out of my mind.

Did I ever tell you that I love you?
That’s important to me now.
Now I am dealing in daydreams
Of how I can touch you somehow.

If you ever change your feelings…
If you ever feel like I do…
I hope that you can reach me.
Cause I’m not quite over you.

I’m not quite over you.

My Hidden Genius (lyrics) – by Christopher Smith

He’s locked down in his hole under the stairs,
Breathing the stale subterranean air.
Where the spiders are cranky and the silverfish eat
All my skritchy scratch paper.
That’s where I keep my hidden genius.
  My hidden genius.

He’s starved for attention. He’s cravin’ some light.
He whines and he cries and he calls out all night.
“Does anyone up there even know I’m around around???”
So I open his hole and I holler, “Pipe Down, you hidden genius!”
  “Shut up, hidden genius!”

Sometimes I’m tempted to put that big pillow right over his face
Put him out of his misery
Because we both need the sleep
and the worms need the space…

My good friends come over. They sit for a spell.
Noise leaks thru the floor and they say, “What the hell’s?
all that thumpety thumping? That rattling chains?”
I say, “I don’t hear nothin'”
Cause I can’t explain my hidden genius.
  My hidden genius.

I used to wonder, if he ever got out, where on earth would he go?
well, last night I left his door open a crack. And now I know…

I found him down at Matteucci’s, playin’ at the bar.
Singin’ his heart out to an empty tip jar.
And the tv was on. Drunks were drowning him out.
They didn’t give a flying fuck about my hidden genius!
  My hidden genius…

He’s locked down in his hole under the stairs,
Breathing the stale subterranean air.
Where the spiders are snarky and the silverfish eat
All my skritchy scratch paper.
Go back to sleep, my hidden genius.

Go to sleep hidden genius.
Count some damn sheep hidden genius!
Not one peep!
  My hidden genius…

Mated (lyrics) – by Todd Rundgren

Everyone asks, Are we some kind of lovers?
Everyone asks what you’re doing with me.
I know this is not what they want…
They’re afraid you’ve been blinded.
But I already know how it’s going to be…

If anyone should ask, say we’re Mated.
For as long as this life lasts, we are Mated.
Why else would you be here right now?
And you know we’ll still be here tomorrow.

Nobody else understands what I’m doing.
Nobody else makes me act in this way.
And because they can’t comprehend
What we mean to each other,
They won’t leave you alone. So you know what to say…

If anyone should ask, say we’re Mated.
For as long as this life lasts, we are Mated.
Why else would you be here right now?
And you know we’ll still be here tomorrow.

I hold you in my heart, ’cause we’re Mated.

In a very special part, we are Mated.
Why else would I be here right now?
And you know I’ll still be here tomorrow.

I see things far ahead,
Maybe light… Maybe beautiful children…
I don’t have words I’m thinking of,
But it’s way beyond what they call love.

And, If anyone should ask, say we’re Mated.

That Kind Of Love (lyrics) – by Pierce Pettis

Can’t be bought or sold or faked…
   That kind of Love.
It always gives itself away,
   That kind of Love.
Wiser than the wisest sage,
   It’s innocence makes me ashamed,
‘Til I’m not sure I can take
   That kind of Love.

Pride and hatred cannot stand
   That kind of love.
Greater love hath no man
   Than that kind of Love.
It won’t be kept unto itself.
It spreads its charm, it casts its spell
‘Til no one’s safe this side of hell
   From That kind of Love.

Love, rejected and ignored,
Held in chains, behind closed doors.
Stuff of legend and of songs..
and, deep down, everybody longs
For That kind of Love . . . Oh, That kind of Love!

Some people never know
   That kind of Love.
Though it only takes a child to show
   That kind of Love.
Widows smile and strong men weep
and Little ones play at its feet.
The deaf can hear, the blind can see
   That kind of Love.

Love triumphant. Love on fire.
Love that humbles and inspires.
Love that does not hesitate,
With No conditions, No restraints…
That kind of Love . . . Oh, That kind of Love!

How could anyone deny
   That kind of Love?
Knowing every heart is measured by
    That kind of Love.
Even stars fall from the sky.
   Everything will fall in time.
Except those things that cannot die
   That kind of Love.

Oh, may you be remembered by
   That kind of Love.

The Last Time It Mattered (lyrics) – by Dee Carstensen

I waited in the car outside the airport, as she ran in to get him.
I could see them through the glass.
The plane arrived on time. The man’s on time,
His life runs just like clockwork, but his face is just a mask…
Her arms embraced him. Or maybe they erased him, I don’t know.
She’s searching in his eyes, asking for a simple piece of information
And he cannot say.

And that was the last time it mattered, he might not love her anymore.
That was the last time it mattered, that he could not say for sure.
That was the last time it mattered that his reasons didn’t fly.
The last time that love would pass her by.

He left a window open wide enough for her to leave without a whisper.
Or a sweet goodbye.
Her love in the hands of another man was all it took for him to miss her.
Or to wonder why.
His thoughts embrace her, just like they erased her all those years,
and he’s searching in his soul, asking for a simple piece of information
and he cannot say.

And that was the last time it mattered, he might not love her anymore.
That was the last time it mattered, that he could not say for sure.
That was the last time it mattered that his reasons didn’t fly.
The last time that love would pass her by.

Idlewild (lyrics) by Gretchen Peters

They’re in the front seat. He’s got the radio low
And the moon hangs over Idlewild as the planes touch down.
He is talking, but she’s not listening…
She is thinking of her father, who died when she was young.

I’m in the back seat, they think I’m sleeping.
But I am listening for the cracks between their voices in the dark.
We are a family. We are a shipwreck.
And we’re picking up my grandma, who is getting very old…

And they think she’s dying,
But I think she’s laughing.
I think she’s riding Halley’s Comet from Fort Lauderdale to here.
But, when I see her,
I’ll keep her secret.
We all have our secrets that we keep inside ourselves.

They built this airport. But, in a few years,
They’ll name it after Kennedy, the one who died today.
And he will leave her. And she will suffer.
And they will never really know each other at all.

They think we’re driving,
But I know we’re drifting.
They think we’re off on some adventure where the hero saves the day.
We think we’re special.
We think we’re golden.
We think we’re walking on the moon, but we are dancing in the dark.

We shoot our rockets. We shoot our Presidents.
We shoot the commies and the niggers and the Viet Cong.
Everything changes. Everything stays the same.
And the moon hangs over Idlewild as the planes touch down,

Seven Shades of Blue (lyrics) by Beth Nielsen Chapman

I wanna hold you now and listen to you breathe.
It’s like the ocean’s sound, whispering through the trees.
In the hollow of your shoulderthere’s a tidepool of my tears.
Where the waves came crashing over
And the shoreline disappeared.

Oh, baby, close your eyesFly back there with me.
To where the phosphor shines green flashlights from the sea.
And our nets were full of soft shells and our hearts were free from toil.
And we made love on the kitchen table
Until the water reached a boil.

We hold it all for a little while, don’t we?
Kiss the dice.
Taste the rain like little knives upon our tongues.
We can do no wrong when the lights go on
And the music plays
And we take the stage like we own the place,
As if time were cheap and the night forever young.

So let them turn my soul Seven Shades of Blue
And, with the ocean’s roar, I will wave to you.
And the birds will sing my laughter and the whales will steal my song.
I’ll be okay forever after.
And the world will get along.

We hold it all for a little while, don’t we?
Kiss the dice.
Taste the rain like little knives upon our tongues.
We can do no wrong when the lights go on
And the music plays
And we take the stage like we own the place,
As if time were cheap and the night forever young.

Farthest Shore (lyrics) by David Wilcox

We were there in the woods, by the water.
We left our packs up against that willow tree.
We dove right in, keeping just what we were born with,
Our Memories, our Knowledge and our Dreams.

As I swam away from our possessions,
I imagined that they were gone forever more.
And for once I was glad that all I treasured
Would still be with me as I reached other shore.

So…Let me dive into the water,
Leave behind all that I’ve worked for,
Except what I remember and believe.
And, when I stand on the farthest shore,
I will have all I need

After the blaze burned our cabin down to ashes…
Where we’d slept warm, now the sky lets in the rain.
I found the strings, frets and rusted latches,
But I will never hear that old guitar again.
These four walls are only in my memory,
Where these stone steps rise to nothing in the air…
So one last look and I’m headed for the river
To wash my hands and try to say this prayer.

So…Let me dive into the water,
Leave behind all that I’ve worked for,
Except what I remember and believe.
And, when I stand on the farthest shore,
I will have all I need

When my time to live this life is over,
I’ll tip my hat when I think about that swim.
And of all the things that make a life worth living
That only come to those who dive right in

So…Let me dive into the water,
Leave behind all that I’ve worked for,
Except what I remember and believe.
And, when I stand on the farthest shore,
I will have all I need

All I need…..
Let me dive into the water…
It’s all I need….

The Wall of Death (lyrics) by Richard Thompson

Let me ride on the wall of death one more time.
Let me ride on the wall of death one more time.
You can waste your time on the other rides,
but this is the nearest to being alive.
Let me take my chances on the Wall of Death.

You can go with the crazy people in the crooked house.
You can fly away on the rocket or spin in the mouse.
The tunnel of love might amuse you.
And Noah’s Ark might confuse you.
But let me take my chances on the Wall of Death.

On the Wall of Death,
All the World is far from me.
On the Wall of Death,
It’s the nearest to being free.

Well you’re going nowhere when you ride on the carousel.
And maybe you’re strong, but what’s the good in ringing a bell?
The switchback will make you crazy.
Beware of the bearded lady.
Oh let me take my chances on the Wall of Death.

Let me ride on the wall of death one more time.
Let me ride on the wall of death one more time.
You can waste your time on the other rides,
but this is the nearest to being alive.
Let me take my chances on the Wall of Death.
Let me take my chances on the Wall of Death.
Let me take my chances on the Wall of Death.
